INDEED, nowhere in the world will you find more history, pageantry, world-renowned museums, galleries and performing arts.

Although all of this is spread out over 40 square miles, you'd be surprised how easy it is to get around. London's underground train system, known as the "Tube," can take you anywhere.

Bring your walking shoes and an umbrella; most of the city's famous landmarks are a comfortable stroll from city hotels, and, of course, England is known for its impromptu showers.

June, July and August are the most popular months for visitors, when the days are generally sunny and the evenings a bit chilly and refreshing. By traveling in the shoulder months of April, May and September, you can still have good weather but will pay less for airfare and lodging. (All pricing in our stories is based on a conversion rate of $1.75 = 1 pound; that rate can fluctuate.) For a special Christmas you can't beat London: It may be cold, with the occasional snowstorm, but the English really know how to have fun at this time of year.
